Tucker Hume’s 83rd minute strike led third-ranked North Carolina to a 2-1 win over North Florida on Monday night, keeping the Tar Heels unbeaten record intact. The goal was the fourth of the season for the redshirt junior from San Angelo, Texas and came after Alex Morrell’s 57th minute equalizer for the Ospreys.
Jamaican international Omar Holness opened the scoring for the Tar Heels with his first of the season in the 50th minute.
Coastal Carolina and Virginia keep unbeaten records intact
No. 5 Coastal Carolina was back in action Monday night after nine days off, but didn’t skip a beat with a 3-1 win over UAB.
Colombian midfielder Sergio Camargo led the way with the third multi-goal game of his career. The junior scored a pair of unassisted goals in the first half and after Freddy Ruiz pulled one back for the Blazers from the spot in the 68th minute Miguel Gutierrez put the game away in the 74th minute.
Freshman Derrick Etienne, who spent the summer playing for New York Red Bulls II in USL, scored his first college goal in the 84th minute to lift No. 6 Virginia to a 1-0 road victory over VCU.
VCU dominated play for much of the second half and nearly opened the scoring in the 65th minute when Sheldon Sullivan made a perfectly timed sliding tackle to deny Ivan Sakou a breakaway. Hoos goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell had to make only one save to record his fourth shutout of the season. Through seven games, the U.S. youth international has allowed only four goals and has a 0.54 goals against average.
UC Santa Barbara adds to UCLA’s woes; Juan Sanchez double lifts Tulsa
UC Santa Barbara scored four unanswered goals and held on to top UCLA 4-2 on Monday.
Larry Ndjock opened the scoring in the 29th minute with his first of the season, but the Gauchos tied it up nine minutes later with the first of two goals from Nick DePuy. The flood gates opened in the third half for the Gauchos with three goals scored in a nine-minute span by Ahinga Selemani, DePuy and Josue Espana.
Seyi Adekoya added his third goal in two games for the Bruins in the 79th minute, but that was as close as it would get. The loss was the fourth of the season for last year’s College Cup finalists and preseason No. 1, dropping their record to 2-4. The Gauchos four goals were the most conceded by the Bruins in a regular season game since 2010.
DePuy’s double ups the junior target forward’s season total to six to go with the 10 he scored last season.
Freshman Juan Sanchez tied things up in the 82nd minute and delivered the golden goal three minutes into overtime to lift Tulsa to a 3-2 win over UMKC.
The Roos took a 2-0 lead with goals from Hamish Smylie and Pandelis Popgeorgiev, but Cole Poppen pulled one back for the Golden Hurricane in the 41st minute to pave the way for Sanchez’s heroics. The New York Red Bulls Academy product from Ossining, N.Y. leads Tulsa in scoring with four goals and a pair of assists. The game-winner was his second this year.
